Dr. Hopwood grew up in Clearwater and graduated from Countryside High School. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and Philosophy from the University of Miami, a Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency at the University of Florida.
A continuous student, Dr. Hopwood has completed continuing education courses given by the leading institutions in the country, including the Seattle Institute for Advanced Dental Education, the Dawson Center, the Pankey Institute, the Misch International Implant Institute and the Schuster Center. He was first asked to teach while still a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, where he gave lectures and taught preclinical lab. Next, he was asked to teach at the University of Florida AEGD program he attended, currently he is an Associate Professor at the University of Florida’s College of Dentistry and a part-time Clinical Instructor at their Post-Doctoral Residency Program, where he has taught for over 20 years. He has also been asked to teach at the prestigious Pankey Institute in Key Biscayne FL and at Spear Education in Scottsdale AZ. For over 5 years, his articles were published monthly in the state dental journal.
In 2000, his lifelong goal of practicing in his hometown was realized when he purchased his practice from Dr. Robert N. Crawford. The practice is located 1/2 mile from where he grew up. He and his wife, Carly, were married in 2001. Their son, Kyle, was born in 2004, their daughter, Cece, was born in 2006 and their son, Jason, was born in 2010. His family is a true passion in his life and he can often be seen in and around the area with his wife and children. He enjoys soccer, tennis, fishing and other sports. His free time is often spent on the boat with his family.
Dr. Hopwood is a member of the Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, the American Equilibration Society, the American College of Dentists, the International Congress of Oral Implantology, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the Academy of General Dentistry, the Florida Academy of Dental Practice Administration, the Seattle Study Club, the Pinnacle Study Club, the Upper Pinellas County Dental Association, the West Coast District Dental Association, the Florida Dental Association, and the American Dental Association. He has received fellowship awards from the American College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and the International Congress of Oral Implantology.
Professionally, Dr. Hopwood has been very involved in community projects, serving as chairman of the fluoridation committee that spearheaded the fluoridation of the Pinellas county water supply. He has volunteered for many charitable organizations, including Gulf Coast Dental Outreach, Children’s Dental Health Month, and helped implement Give Kids a Smile in northern Pinellas county. He serves as a legislative contact dentist, serving as a liason for legislators with dental policy questions. He was the Scientific Chairman for the 2019 Florida Dental Convention, a meeting that drew over 10,000 participants. He has often been recognized for his leadership in organized dentistry, serving as the president of the Upper Pinellas County Dental Association during the 2008-2009 year.
